Smoke Detector Program

Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue has a smoke detector program that provides smoke detectors free of charge to those people that live with the fire district who may need one. Contact us for more information.

It is recommended that you check and test your smoke detectors at least twice a year to ensure that they are in proper working order. A good time to do this is during the two time changes of daylight savings time.

Please note that we only provide smoke detectors, not carbon monoxide (CO)detectors. CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is poisonous to humans and animals. CO is a result of incomplete combustion. Some common sources of CO are internal combustion engines (such as vehicles and generators), and natural gas or propane burning appliances. You should evaluate your need for a CO detector. If you need help in doing so, contact us so that we can schedule an appointment to assist you, free of charge.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is lighter than air. For your protection the gas company adds a distinctive odor (rotten eggs) to natural gas so that leaks can be detected.

If you smell a natural gas odor do not light any open flames or turn anything on or off. IMMEDIATELY get everyone out of the house and call the gas company and the fire department (911) using a phone line outside of the residence and affected area.

It is important that you know where your gas meter is located BEFORE an emergency arises. Additionally, you should keep an adjustable pipe or crescent-type wrench with your emergency supplies or next to your gas meter.
